The membership of Optica has elected Prof Gerd Leuchs, director emeritus at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light, Germany, as the society’s 2022 vice president. Prof Judith Dawes, Macquarie University, Australia, was voted in as a director-at-large. The board of directors appointed Prof Min Qiu of Westlake University, China, as a director-at-large.

RS Components has inaugurated its expanded distribution center at the Bad Hersfeld location. It's the biggest in the company. After the project has now been completed from the technical point of view, RS gave selected customers and suppliers a deep insight into the highly automated system. In particular, the largest multi-shuttle system installed in Germany by the manufacturer Dematic is used here.

Edmund Optics appointed Dr. Ekaterina (Katya) Golovchenko as Senior Vice President of Technology and Development. This newly created position is part of a series of aggressive technology-related investments aimed at delivering greater optical innovation to meet the demands of an increasingly complex market.

What will the production hall of the future look like? Interested parties can now get the answer in the redesigned Omron Automation Center Barcelona. Visitors can experience Omron's automation solutions live on site, including robotics, quality control, flexible manufacturing and artificial intelligence. Dr. Klaus Geißdörfer (47) takes over the chairmanship of the management of the Ebm-Papst Group with headquarters in Mulfingen (Baden-Württemberg). Dr Klaus Fiedler will become the new chief executive officer of LPKF Laser & Electronics AG. In September, Thorne Lietz joined the electronics team at InnoLas Solutions as senior sales manager. For 25 years, he held various positions at LPKF Laser & Electronics.

Zeiss has confirmed the successfully completed acquisition of Capture 3D. Capture 3D is GOM's sales partner for optical 3D measurement technology in the USA. Upon completion of the transaction, Capture 3D will become part of the Industrial Quality & Research division.

On the occasion of Vision 2021 trade fair in Stuttgart, Macnica ATD Europe officially introduced Mr Shoichi Teshiba as the new CEO of all European Macnica operations.

Leoni sells the Industrial Solutions business group, which is part of the WCS division (Wire & Cable Solutions) and which makes up significant parts of its industrial business, to BizLink. With this, Leoni is trying to stabilize further.

ABB has started building a new hall at the Minden location. The new building, a 2,500 square meter production hall for the Traction division, expands production capacities and is intended to contribute to better quality assurance.

Dr. Erwin Sick founded his company in South Baden in September 1946. It is now 75 years old. At an official ceremony at the company's headquarters in Waldkirch on September 24, 2021, invited guests and companions from politics, business and science, together with the founding family Sick and the board of directors, paid tribute to the past 75 years and took a look into the future. The Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA is getting a new building in Stuttgart-Vaihingen. With the groundbreaking ceremony on September 27, Baden-Württemberg's Minister of Economic Affairs, Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, symbolically opened the construction site together with Thomas Bauernhansl, director of the Fraunhofer IPA, and the architect Stephan Birk.

Together, Bruno Schnekenburger, CEO of Yaskawa Europe, and the mayor of the city of Hattersheim, Klaus Schindling, laid the foundation stone for Yaskawa's new European headquarters in Hattersheim am Main near Frankfurt: In a festive setting, they traditionally and symbolically built a time capsule into the foundation on September 22nd of the resulting shell. The move into the new building is planned for 2023.

During the general meeting of the VDMA Robotics + Automation Association, the members of the VDMA Machine Vision Division elected a new board. Mark Williamson, Managing Director of Stemmer Imaging Ltd, was subsequently elected Chairman.

Excelitas Technologies is expanding its capacities in the assembly of highly complex optomechanical systems and components for the semiconductor industry: On September 21, 2021, the photonics manufacturer opened a new plant for its subsidiary Qioptiq in Göttingen.

At the end of August 2021, the Wenglor Group took over the Scottish-French company TPL Vision. The specialist, founded in 2005, will be integrated into the Wenglor Group as a division, but will continue to exist as an independent business unit.

Optisense, expert in contactless coating thickness measurement, is further expanding its proximity to customers and enlarging its sales team: Sascha Schmidt, who has been responsible for hand-held measuring devices since recently, and Patrick Voos, who now strengthens the field sales team for industrial measuring solutions, are on board.

The order books in mechanical and plant engineering have filled well, at the same time many companies are struggling with increasing material and delivery bottlenecks. In particular, the scarcity of electrotechnical and electronic components has increased dramatically.

On September 10, 2021, Dr Ana Gonzalez joined iPronics Programmable Photonics as director of strategic partnerships. In this role, she will be responsible for all sales and service activities building strong relationships with clients and strategic partners, closely working together to achieve long term goals and objectives.
