Baumer Opens New Innovation Lab for Sensor Testing
Sensor manufacturer Baumer has set up a new innovation lab at its headquarters in Frauenfeld, Switzerland, where new developments undergo testing and inspection procedures. In a 1,300-square-meter space in the basement of the Innovation Center, sensors from the development centers are tested around the clock.
Sensors are tested during development at the innovation lab in Frauenfeld. First, the manufacturer simulates the effects of aging on the sensors, for example through temperature shocks (pictured). This is followed by leak tests to ensure a high level of robustness.

The test runs are designed to identify vulnerabilities early on and ensure reliable continuous operation for users. According to the company, the testing standards go beyond regulatory requirements in order to simulate even extreme operating conditions.
The test range includes, among other things:
- Leak-tightness tests in the water-resistant chamber
- Shock tests on a seismic shock test rig
- Vibration tests using a shaker
- Temperature tests and accelerated aging in climate chambers
- Performance tests of linearity, repeatability, resolution, and object independence across the entire measurement and temperature range
- Verification tests for response times, immunity to extraneous light, robustness against cross-talk, spot sizes, and sound beams
Applications include sensors for outdoor use, such as in mobile machinery or the rail industry. “For these applications, it is crucial that the sensors continue to deliver precise data even after years of use,” says Head of Development Wolfgang Wehrle.
