Safety requirements for autonomous mobility

The TÜV Association is calling for clear rules on AI, data access, and cybersecurity to ensure that autonomous vehicles can be safely integrated into traffic.

A new position paper presents a seven-point plan for the safe design of digital mobility. The association emphasizes the need for adaptive regulation that keeps pace with technological advances. It recommends the targeted expansion of autonomous vehicles in pilot projects to build trust. The association warns against regulatory gray areas, such as those that led to safety gaps in the US, and calls for EU-wide harmonized rules for vehicle-generated data and independent testing.

Safety is crucial for the acceptance of autonomous systems, which is why binding rules and tests are necessary. The Autonomous Vehicle Approval and Operation Ordinance in Germany already provides a legal framework, but series-production vehicles and practical experience are still lacking. The TÜV association is calling for uniform European procedures and cross-border test corridors.
