Cognex Acquires RealSense
With this acquisition, Cognex is expanding its portfolio to include 3D depth sensing technology for robotics and physical AI. The market is expected to grow significantly by 2030.
Cognex is expanding its business beyond traditional industrial machine vision and is acquiring RealSense, a 3D specialist. With this acquisition, the machine vision provider secures an established platform for robotic perception systems, thereby tapping into a new growth market centered on robotics and physical AI.
The purchase price is approximately $500 million and will be financed entirely from Cognex’s existing cash reserves. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026. Prior to the acquisition, RealSense will spin off its facial authentication business into a standalone company.
RealSense was founded by Intel in 2014 and spun off as an independent company in 2025. The company specializes in depth cameras and 3D perception technologies, which are used in industrial robots, autonomous mobile robots, quadruped robots, and humanoid systems, among other applications. The technology enables machines to perceive their environment in three dimensions and make autonomous decisions based on that perception.
For Cognex, the acquisition represents a strategic expansion of its existing offerings. In the future, the portfolio will range from industrial identification and 2D and 3D measurement technology to depth sensing, navigation, and robotic perception. The goal is to build an end-to-end platform for visual intelligence in industrial and autonomous applications.
The market for robotic perception is considered one of the most dynamic sectors of industrial image processing. According to the company, this segment currently has a market size of approximately $600 million and could grow to about $1.6 billion by 2030. RealSense expects revenue of between 80 and 90 million U.S. dollars by 2026.
