PhotonDelta contributes €53.8M to PIXEurope

The Dutch National Growth Fund plans a significant contribution to the photonic integrated circuits pilot line that will be built in the Netherlands.

This pilot line is being built as part of the larger European effort, PIXEurope, to further accelerate photonic chip production in Europe. This funding will help create a resilient European photonic chip value chain that enables greater autonomy and economic independence in Europe. In addition, it consolidates the Netherlands’ leading position in the European photonic chip industry. Moreover, the presence of a pilot plant is an important link in the chain to further the development of the ecosystem and stimulate business and innovation.

Photonic chips are unique because of their ability to transfer and process data using light in a sustainable way. They offer significant benefits in terms of speed, energy efficiency and scalability. In addition, photonic chips are helping to introduce new sensing solutions in various industries, including healthcare, food and agriculture, and automotive.

With a financial contribution of 66.3 million euros from the EU Chips Act via the Chips Joint Undertaking, production capacity will be increased and knowledge and expertise in the production of photonic chips will be strengthened. Of the total amount of 380 million euros from PIXEurope funding, 132.6 million is intended for its development in the Netherlands. The Netherlands itself will pay 66.3 million euros, of which 53.8 come from the National Growth Fund plan PhotonDelta. In addition to that funding, 12.5 million euros will come from regular resources from the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
