Imec opens NanoIC pilot line to promote sub-2 nm chip technology
Imec has inaugurated a major extension to its cleanroom on the Leuven campus, which serves as the centerpiece of the European NanoIC initiative

This is dedicated to the development of sub-2 nm system-on-chip technologies. The new 2,000 m² clean room is equipped with advanced equipment, including ASML's High-NA-EUV scanner. This expansion marks an important step in Europe's efforts to advance semiconductor technology, particularly under the European Chips Act.
According to Luc Van den hove, CEO of imec, the NanoIC pilot line will be instrumental in strengthening the European industry in the AI era. Further investments are planned in the coming years, including an additional 4,000 m² clean room. The initiative is supported by a broad network of European partners and is expected to integrate over a hundred new tools. This underlines Europe's commitment to technological excellence and strategic independence in the global semiconductor sector.
