Fraunhofer IPM moves into a new building in Freiburg

The Fraunhofer Institute for Physical Measurement Techniques IPM has moved into its new building in Freiburg. The three-story building on the Am Flugplatz campus is in close proximity to the Technical Faculty of the University of Freiburg. With 7700 square meters of floor space, according to a spokesman, it offers good conditions for the research and development of high-precision and robust measuring systems that are highly relevant for industry. The building was inaugurated on October 1st together with guests from politics and science.

The new building for around 43 million euros, financed by the EU, the state of Baden-Württemberg and the federal government, was necessary due to the rapid growth in the workforce to currently 240 employees. In addition, the technical infrastructure of the former institute building from the 1970s no longer corresponded to the state of the art. The state and federal government provided additional initial equipment funds of 14 million euros, which were used to finance new large devices such as a coordinate measuring machine, a micro-CT and a magnetically shielded room. The previous location of Fraunhofer IPM will in future be used by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE.
