Adar One 3D Ultrasonic Sensor Expands Safety Concepts in Robotics
Sonair Introduces Adar One, a Safety-Certified 3D Ultrasonic Sensor for Human-Robot Interactions

The system meets the requirements up to SIL 2 and Performance Level d and is certified according to IEC 61496, IEC 61508, and ISO 13849. This provides a three-dimensional, non-contact safety device that detects people and objects in the space and meets the requirements of the European Machinery Directive.
Unlike 2D laser scanners, Adar One monitors a 180 × 180° field of view and detects obstacles at various heights. Thanks to its compact design, the Acoustic Detection and Ranging (ADR) technology can be integrated nearly flush into autonomous mobile robots, automated guided vehicles, and humanoid platforms. The sensor achieves a PFH of less than 1.5 × 10⁻⁷ per hour and is already being used in production applications. Adar is also considered the first safety-certified embedded system developed entirely in Rust. A test kit helps developers evaluate the 3D ultrasonic sensor technology.
