ZVEI Calls for Swift Protection of Critical Power Infrastructure
The association has issued a statement in response to the recent attempted attacks on substations in Brandenburg and North Rhine-Westphalia and warns of the consequences for Germany's energy security
ZVEI Chief Executive Officer Wolfgang Weber emphasizes that attacks on substations are always attacks on the country’s ability to function and sees an urgent need for action regarding the physical protection of critical infrastructure.
The association calls on the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the states to swiftly implement the KRITIS umbrella law through corresponding regulations. Operators of critical facilities need a reliable legal framework to be able to invest in physical resilience. Measures should be consistently based on state-of-the-art technology and existing standards.
Weber supports the idea of a resilience fund currently being discussed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs. While security initially incurs costs, it makes economic sense when compared to outages and repairs. Such a fund could help accelerate investments in modern electronic security technology—ranging from access control to video and intrusion detection systems to perimeter protection—and sustainably strengthen the security of supply in Germany.
