Windshield with built-in thermal camera

Lynred and Saint-Gobain Sekurit developed a windshield that incorporates both visible and thermal cameras side-by-side to improve day and night driving safety.

The windshield with an enhanced detection system is designed to help car makers improve the reliability of collision mitigation systems. The sensor system enables thermal imaging through standard windshields. It detects and classifies pedestrians up to 140 meters away in all weather and lighting conditions.

Saint-Gobain Sekurit has developed crystal-based technology to create a transparent area in the windshield that aligns both the visible and thermal imaging cameras. The crystal meets Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requirements and is integrated while maintaining the original performance of the wiper system and the thermal comfort of the passenger compartment.

Lynred supplied a VGA thermal sensor (640 × 480 resolution) equipped with Umicore lenses and configured the camera data input with the pedestrian detection algorithm.

Traditionally, the heat sensors were mounted behind the grille, exposing them to mud, dirt impacts, and other elements. Positioning the visible and heat sensor systems behind the windshield increases AEB's reliability by improving visibility in all scenarios.
