The photonics industry is growing significantly again: New orders rise by 17 percent
The German photonics industry saw significant growth in the first half of 2026. Semiconductors, defense, aviation, and quantum technologies are the main drivers of this growth.
After a period of economic uncertainty, the German photonics industry is once again gaining significant momentum. This is shown by the latest results of an industry survey conducted by Spectaris and OptecNet Deutschland as part of Photonics Germany. According to the survey, new orders in the first half of 2026 rose by approximately 17 percent both domestically and internationally compared to the same period last year.
Companies therefore expect revenue growth of around 9 percent for the full year. Momentum is coming in particular from future-oriented markets such as the semiconductor industry, defense and security technology, aerospace, telecommunications, and quantum technologies. These application areas are driving robust demand for photonic components and systems.
Despite the positive business performance, the overall conditions remain challenging. The U.S. and China continue to rank among the most important sales markets for German photonics companies, yet many firms see growing risks and uncertainties there. Against this backdrop, Europe is becoming increasingly important as both a market and a production location.
The industry also looks to the future with optimism in the long term. International forecasts predict average annual growth of four to six percent for the global photonics market in the coming years. Accordingly, companies’ outlook for 2027 is positive: the majority expects the business situation to improve further and views photonics as a key technology for numerous future markets.
