Gianteye High-Energy CT Expands Testing Capabilities for Large Structures
With the Gianteye high-energy CT system, Fraunhofer IIS is expanding its capabilities in the non-destructive testing of large-volume industrial objects

The gantry system is designed for objects up to the size of a 20-foot ocean freight container and operates with a linear accelerator at 9 MeV. Test objects remain in their original standing or lying positions while the X-ray source and detector rotate on a ring-shaped structure. This allows, for example, filled containers, assembled large structures, or assemblies with moving components to be inspected without repositioning.
The system provides 3D volumetric data with a voxel size of up to approximately 400 micrometers and enables material penetration of up to 20 cm of steel or 60 cm of aluminum. Industrial customers can commission individual measurements or measurement campaigns and, if needed, utilize the analysis services provided by the X-ray Technology Development Center. Gianteye is conceptually based on a pilot system at the Rhineland-Palatinate University of Technology in Kaiserslautern and applies the validated gantry principle to applications such as vehicles and similarly large objects.
