AMA survey: sales declining, order situation continues to deteriorate

The AMA Association for Sensor and Measurement Technology (AMA) asked its 450 members about the economic development in the second quarter. According to its own information, the industry generated a revenue decrease of eight percent in the second quarter compared to the previous quarter. The proportion of AMA member companies that registered short-time work rose to 55 percent in the second quarter.

It is interesting that large and small to medium-sized companies (SMEs) show a similar sales trend, but the expectations are different. While the SMEs had predicted a decline in sales of 14 percent in the first quarter, they generated a less negative result than expected with minus eight percent. For the current quarter, the SMEs expect a minus of three percent. The big companies expected a decline of three percent and had to cope with a decline in sales of nine percent. For the third quarter, the big companies are expecting a minus of one percent.

Development of the most important sales markets in the second quarter

The sales markets of the sensor and measurement technology companies also developed differently in the second quarter. Only sales in the building and heating, ventilation and air conditioning sectors were positive. Medical technology recorded slight declines overall.

Suppliers who deliver to the heavily sensor-driven sectors of automotive, mobility, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering had to accept the sharpest drop in sales. There, expectations for the current quarter are also clearly gloomy. On the other hand, suppliers in semiconductor and medical technology and in their own sensor and measurement technology sectors are confident.
