Die PROFIBUS Nutzerorganisation e.V. (PNO) hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, die technische Weiterentwicklung sowie die internationale Durchsetzung dieser offenen Technologien zu fördern. Dieses Ziel versucht die PNO im Verbund mit 24 weiteren regionalen Vertretungen (RPA) zu erreichen, welche alle Mitglieder im internationalen Dachverband PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI) sind. Dieses globale Netzwerk vereinigt insgesamt 1700 Anbieter, Entwickler, Systemintegratoren und Anwender, deren gemeinsame Interessen die zunehmende Verbreitung, Weiterentwicklung sowie Anwendung von PROFIBUS und PROFINET sind.

Unter PI befinden sich über 50 aktive Arbeitskreise, die für die Entwicklung, Standardisierung und Aufrechterhaltung von PROFIBUS  und PROFINET verantwortlich sind.  Darüber hinaus gibt es ein globales PI-Netzwerk aus akkreditierten Testlaboren sowie Training und Competence Centern, welche internationale Qualitätsstandards garantieren. Keine andere Feldbus-Organisation in der Welt kann einen derartigen Einfluss bzw. eine derartige Reichweite aufweisen - dies macht PROFIBUS und PROFINET zu Weltmarktführern in der industriellen Vernetzung.
