OSA has a new name and look

‘Optica, advancing optics and photonics worldwide’, represents the society from now on

20.09.2021 - The organization’s mission has stayed substantially on the same course its charter members envisioned over a century ago. The significance of the field, the expertise of the OSA founders, and the dedication of those who followed enabled the society to become a global forum for light science and technology.

In concert with the rapid development of the field, the scope and reach of the organization continue to expand at an ever-quickening pace. This growth inspired the OSA’s leadership to carefully consider whether its name reflected the society’s work, constituents, and future.

In 2017, the board of directors launched a multifaceted examination of our name and its alignment with the organization as a whole. This work included wide-reaching consultation with the diverse customers we serve. Communications, branding, and design experts advised  along the way during a methodical search for an identity that signifies a vibrant, global association. The new name must be expansive enough to remain relevant to the future generations who will change the field and the world for the better. At the conclusion of much study, ‘Optica, advancing optics and photonics worldwide’, emerged as the best representation of the society.

This change emerges from the continuity of the society’s mission, core values, and dedication to excellence. It continues to serve as a leading global forum for light science and technology. And its commitment to remain the professional home for optics and photonics innovators and all those with an interest in the field is unwavering.
