Zeiss establishes new Photonics & Optics division

29.05.2024 - In October, the company plans to establish a new strategic business unit in which smaller, specialized units will be bundled in the future.

With effect from the next fiscal year 2024/25, Zeiss will establish a new strategic business unit within the Zeiss Group: Zeiss Photonics & Optics bundles smaller, existing businesses outside the Zeiss divisions that have growth potential and for which Zeiss is the suitable owner.

The units of the Consumer Products strategic business unit from the Consumer Markets division will move to Zeiss Photonics & Optics: Cinematography, Mobile Imaging including brand partnerships and Photo as well as the optics business for hunting and nature observation. From the Zeiss Group's production company, Microoptics, Spectroscopy, Planetarium and Simulation Projection Solutions will move to the new strategic business unit in the future. The combined annual sales of the combined units are around EUR 200 million. With almost 900 employees, Zeiss Photonics & Optics is active worldwide with locations in Germany, Hungary, Great Britain, the USA, India and China.

Focus on growth and the Zeiss brand

In addition to their size, the units are linked by their focus on business with customers in specialized markets and their sometimes extraordinary contribution to the appeal of the Zeiss brand. The new strategic business unit focuses accordingly on the growth of the independent units and, as a whole, will make a significant contribution to brand development. For example, more than 20 million people visit a Zeiss planetarium every year, over 15 million use Zeiss optics for mobile photography, and films produced with Zeiss lenses fascinate viewers and juries around the world in cinemas and via streaming. High-performance micro-optical innovations such as multifunctional glass from Jena, which was presented at the CES in Las Vegas in 2024, are expected to find broad applications in automotive and smart home.

André Kutz, currently Head of Strategy for the Zeiss Group, and Dr. Bernhard Ohnesorge, Managing Director of the Zeiss Group's production company, will take over management of Zeiss Photonics & Optics from the next fiscal year 2024/25. Both have international experience in strategic development and setup as well as growth strategies for new and smaller businesses with a strong focus on technology and innovation.

For Zeiss customers, the reorganization of Photonics & Optics will not involve any changes in products, services or contacts.
