Characterize carbon black-elastomer mixtures fully automatically

ZwickRoell

Soot is a black, powdery solid and an important component of plastics, which has a decisive influence on their physical properties. One of the world's leading suppliers of industrial carbon blacks uses a ZwickRoell roboTest N and an LTM 2 linear testing machine to characterize them in elastomers.

The basis of the system is an electro-dynamic linear testing machine LTM 2 with 1 kN force transducer and adapted pressure plates as well as a temperature chamber for tests beyond normal conditions. The round samples (Ø = 10 mm, h = 10 mm) stored in two magazine towers are handled by a smart robot equipped with a pincer gripper - the roboTest N robot testing system. Controlled by the autoEdition 3 automation software, it removes the individual elastomer cylinders and positions them between the pressure plates in the temperature chamber.

An automatic door largely prevents the exchange of air between the temperature chamber and the environment, thus minimizing temperature changes. After the sample has been tempered, the LTM 2 carries out the test specified by the testXpert III test software and transmits the values determined to the connected house network. The sample is then removed again and the testing machine is freshly loaded.
