Deutsche Messe AG: Siemens builds industrial 5G network in the exhibition hall

17.02.2021 - This year, the Deutsche Messe exhibition center in Hanover will be 5G-ready on more than 1.4 million square meters

For this, the organizer of international capital goods trade fairs has received a frequency allocation in the 3.7-3.8 GHz range from the Federal Network Agency and will expand a total of 30 halls and buildings as well as the entire outdoor area into one of the largest 5G areas in Europe. Siemens plays a special role in this. As one of the most important HANNOVER MESSE exhibitors, Siemens is building a private network technology for a 5G campus network with a focus on use in industry in one of the exhibition halls in Hanover. The network can be used by exhibitors during ongoing trade fairs and by companies for tests and field trials outside of trade fair times.

The exhibition center will thus become a test field and a figurehead for the use of 5G in industry. The possibility of operating such private 5G networks enables companies to adapt them specifically to their requirements in terms of performance, reliability and security. In Germany, companies also benefit from the fact that they can use private 5G frequencies exclusively at their locations. Siemens has already taken the first steps on the way to a private industrial 5G network in its automotive test center in Nuremberg. Siemens is currently building its own private 5G infrastructure at its plants in Amberg and Karlsruhe.

For this purpose, Siemens relies exclusively on its in-house developed products and solutions. Siemens is now installing a private 5G network on the exhibition grounds in order to make the advantages of this technology usable and clear for industrial users. With the locally available private frequency ranges, companies can set up private 5G networks to network closed areas - and thereby significantly increase flexibility in production and logistics. This includes, for example, the operation of driverless, autonomously operating transport systems (Automated Guided Vehicles / AGVs), such as those used in the highly flexible production of automobiles or in intralogistics. Thanks to the fast data transmission via 5G, all components in production can react to changes in almost real time. In connection with future technologies such as edge and cloud computing, 5G networks simplify the flexible analysis of large amounts of data and thus become a driver for the digital transformation of industry.
