Video Microscope Unit with Enlarged Field of View

Optical metrology for research and industry

31.05.2022 - A metrology manufacturer has equipped a video microscope for research and industrial quality assurance with a larger field of view and higher illumination quality.

Materials research and testing have a high priority, and when features are to be examined that are too small or too sensitive for tactile measurement methods, optics come into play. Until now, the video microscope units of two VMU series have been used for this purpose across all industries: the VMU-V and the Wide VMU-V. Each has its own advantages: One's compact design makes it suitable for easy installation in inline equipment, while the other has a wider field of view. And now Mitutoyo, length measurement manufacturer from Japan, is launching the Wide VMU-HR built-in microscope.

Video microscope unit with 16.8 mm aperture and LED illumination

This video microscope unit combines the advantages of its two predecessors, for example, compact design and a large field of view, but surpasses them in some respects. The Wide VMU-HR can be used together with the high-resolution objectives of the HR series and offers an aperture diameter of 16.8 mm. In combination with the standard LED adapter, its telecentric illumination is significantly stronger and more homogeneous than that of previous models.

The Wide VMU-HR is also the first video microscope designed for viewing in the near-infrared wavelength range. In combination with large-area NIR and SWIR camera sensors, the series is thus suitable for additional areas of application, for example in the semiconductor industry.

Can be adapted to existing solutions

By optimizing the beam path, the WIDE VMU-HR is now compatible with Mitutoyo's HR series lenses. These objectives offer a larger numerical aperture than the standard objectives at the same magnification, allowing up to 30% higher optical resolution, bringing even the smallest details into sharp focus.
Even though the body of the Wide VMU-HR is barely larger than the VMU-V, the former has a field of view seven times larger. In terms of inline solutions, this means that the device can be more easily adapted to existing solutions for large sections of manufactured parts to be inspected. For systems that do not have the standardized C-mount connection, this video microscope unit can be converted to an F-mount connection, as used with APS-C format sensors.
